The iPad Versus the Personal Computer

New technology, like the iPad, is much more than a really cool gadget a person can use to surf the Internet and play games on. In fact, the iPad is now giving the personal computer a run for its money. With the increase of technology, it is now possible to do most everything that can be done on a personal computer on the smaller, sleeker, and more hip iPad.

It is estimated that shipments for personal computers will decrease in 2011 from 17.9 percent to merely 14.3 percent. By 2014, these numbers could be as low as 10%. Considering how important personal computers are to corporations and home life, these are surprising statistics.

When one takes a closer look at tablets, like the iPad, perhaps it isn’t so surprising to see the decrease in personal computers. The iPad can basically do anything that a personal computer can do. Everything from online shopping, online learning (through accredited online colleges) to playing various games of poker can be done just as easy on the iPad as it can on one’s PC..  In fact, iPads can be a substitute for the PC. Plus, the iPad is sleek, small, and can go anywhere. When was the last time a PC was easily packed up and taken on the train?

Just introduced at CES 2011, Samsung has also come out with a tablet, the Galaxy, that is taking another bite out of the PC market. And Samsung isn’t the only company to jump on the tablet bandwagon. It’s likely that more and more technology and electronics companies will come out with their own version of the iPad—sure to be smaller, faster, and better than the previous generation.

There’s no doubt about it. Tablets, especially the iPad, are giving the personal computer some stiff competition. It’s entirely possible that entire corporations may switch completely over to iPads and other tablet devices in coming years. The convenience, price, and technology that comes with an iPad is certainly something to think about.
